Visiting Fortress Hohenwerfen with kids

Falcons, knights and a real castle to explore

Updated July 2026 · Hohenwerfen Castle Tickets Concierge Team

A real clifftop castle with eagles flying overhead is close to a child's idea of perfect. Hohenwerfen makes an easy, memorable family day from Salzburg.

The falcons steal the show

The twice-daily flight demonstration — eagles and vultures sweeping low over the ramparts — is the moment most children remember. Arrive in good time for the 11:15 or 15:15 show and find a spot with a clear view of the arena.

Knights, armour and dungeons

The armoury and the guided tour bring the castle's fighting past to life, and the dungeons add a shiver of drama. Children's tickets cover ages 6–14, and under-6s go free with a paying adult.

Getting up the rock

With younger children the panorama lift saves little legs the climb to the gate; older kids may enjoy the 20-minute walk up the fortress path. Either way, allow 2.5–3 hours for the whole visit.

Frequently asked

Is it pram-friendly?

The lift reaches the gate, but the interior guided tour has steps and cobbles and cannot take prams — a baby carrier works better.

Do kids go free?

Under-6s enter free with a paying adult; children 6–14 use the child ticket.
